View Menu

Overview

Use the View menu to explore model output, review your EFT criteria choices (scenarios/indicators/years), look at an Annual or Roll-Up view of output, synchronize multiple viewers, and view scenario details (including detailed meta-data).

Some of these options can also be accessed using buttons on the EFT Reader toolbar (EFT Criteria, Annual, Roll-Up, Meander Visualization).

The options under the View menu are:

Select & View Output

The EFT Reader is a viewer of model run results that have been included in a database located on a remote server. Use the Viewer form (File | New Viewer Set or Edit | Add Viewer or View | EFT Criteria) to specify the scenarios, indicators, and years (i.e., EFT criteria) for which you wish to see run results.

To select and view EFT output:

    1. With a Viewer form open, select at least one scenario, indicator and year; to do this, click in the checkboxes beside each entry for which you wish to see output (use the right-click menu options for multiple selections).

Tip:

For indicators and years, you can highlight contiguous rows by left-clicking on the first one in the block, and then left-clicking on the last one in the block while holding down the Shift key (or vice versa). The same result can be achieved by left-clicking and dragging the mouse over the rows to select. You can also highlight (or clear) non-contiguous rows by holding down the Ctrl key while left-clicking on each selection.

    1. When you have made your criteria selections, click on the Show Annual toolbar button to generate a summary of model output by year, or on the Show Roll-Up toolbar button to view a multi-year summary of output from the database for your criteria choices.
    2. Output will be generated for each combination of scenario, indicator and year you select. The colors represent indicator performance that ranges from poor to good. In the example below, red means poor performance, yellow means fair performance, and green means good performance. You can set your color preferences by selecting Preferences under the Edit menu.

To edit your EFT criteria:

    1. With an Annual or Roll-Up view showing, click on the Show Criteria toolbar button, or select EFT Criteria from the View menu.
    2. Edit your choices as needed; use the right-click menu options (described below) for each criterion to help you make your changes.
    3. Display your new output by clicking on the Show Annual or Show Roll-Up toolbar buttons.

Right-click Menu Options

Use the right-click menu on the Viewer form to assist with the selection of scenarios, indicators and years. When you have highlighted your choices in a particular list, right-click anywhere in that list to open a context-sensitive menu of options.

Scenarios

Indicators

Years

Use the available options to simultaneously check or uncheck all selected rows, check or uncheck all rows in the list, show ID values from the database, show the eco-region, and show scenario details. On the Years right-click menu, there is also a Check Relevant option. When this option is chosen, the years are selected automatically by the EFT Reader; only those years that are relevant to the selected scenario are checked.

Synchronize Viewers

When you have multiple Viewer forms open, or multiple spatial reports, you can make them all respond together when you make a selection that affects one of them.

To synchronize viewer forms:

    1. Open at least 2 viewer forms, each with a set of EFT criteria selected.
    2. Under the View menu, click Synchronize Viewers to turn the option on; the menu will close.
    3. Click the Show Annual toolbar button; an annual output summary will display for all open views.
    4. Open the View menu again and you will see a checkmark beside Synchronize Viewers. Click on the option again to turn it off; the menu will close.
    5. Click on one of the annual views to give it the focus, and click on the Show Criteria toolbar button.
    6. Only the view that had the focus will change, i.e., the open views are no longer synchronized.

To synchronize spatial reports:

    1. Open at least 2 spatial reports.
    2. Under the View menu, click Synchronize Viewers to turn the option on; the menu will close.
    3. Change the zoom or pan on one of the spatial reports, and you will see that both reports respond.
    4. Open the View menu again and you will see a checkmark beside Synchronize Viewers. Click on the option again to turn it off; the menu will close.
    5. Change the zoom or pan again on one of the spatial reports.
    6. Only the report that had the focus will change, i.e., the spatial reports are no longer synchronized.

Meander Visualization

Choose the Meander Visualization option under the View menu to access a tool that shows how the EFT model predicts the meanders in the Sacramento River to change over time. This option can also be accessed using the toolbar button of the same name.

The simulation is based on historical flow and centerline data, e.g., flows for 1986 are used in the prediction of river meander in 2053.

To visualize meander in the Sacramento River:

    1. From the View menu, select the Meander Visualization option; this action opens the Meander Migration: Visualization form.
    2. Make selections from the Scenario and Segment drop-down lists of available options; the scenarios refer to flow and gravel conditions.
    3. Click on the Start button ( ) at the bottom of the form to load the visualization.
    4. You can change the speed with which the visualization proceeds by making a selection from the Speed drop-down list of options.
    5. Pause and Stop visualizations as needed using the buttons at the bottom of the form. When paused, you can use the Back and Forward buttons to incrementally change the visualization year for closer examination.
    1. The Years field indicates the historical year that provides the flow data and, in parentheses, the future year to which the meander visualization corresponds. In the example above, 1986 is the year that provides the flow information used in the prediction of river meander in 2053.

Scenario Details and Reviews

Choose the Scenario Details and Reviews option under the View menu to access metadata about each of the scenarios in the EFT database. Note that the Scenario Details and Reviews option is only available when you have a view open that shows the list of scenarios (e.g., after opening a new view with Open Viewer Set or Add Viewer, or by clicking on the Show Criteria toolbar button for an existing viewer set in annual or roll-up mode).

To view scenario metadata:

    1. With a view open that shows the list of scenarios, left-click to select (highlight) the scenario for which you wish to view details. This action opens the Scenario Details and Reviews form for the selected scenario. When the form opens, there will be a summary description of the scenario showing in the right-hand pane.
    2. Expand the file tree in the left-hand pane and left-click to select an entry (data or indicator) for which you would like to see details and reviews. You can view details for one entry at a time.
    3. Summary information about your selection will display in the frame at right in an Abstract tab.
    4. Switch to the Details tab for additional information, e.g., key uncertainties and assumptions, and to the Contacts tab for the name and contact co-ordinates for the Principal Investigator associated with the data or indicator you selected.
    1. More detailed supporting metadata and documents (Data Files) are also provided for many metadata entries. The availability of data files is indicated by a diskette icon as shown in the image below. Data files may be included in a variety of file formats, but are most frequently PDF. Click on the data file name or on the diskette icon to start the download process.
